Fellow Victor Sojo has recently produced a video with our India partners at Aavishkaar, showing how to extract DNA from a banana using only household and easy-to-find items.
The idea was to use the minimum number of reagents possible, so that the experience is easier to explain for young students. To test this, Victor has been visiting local schools to let the children try it out for themselves.
It is important that the knowledge stays in the community after Science Corps fellows leave, so Victor has also been demonstrating the procedure at teacher trainings.
Also to facilitate the implementation by local teachers, Victor additionally produced a 1-page protocol that teachers can use to run the extraction independently.
